Highgate turning into a ghost town, says paranormal investigator
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Highgate Vampire

Highgate could be turning into a ghost town, according to a paranormal investigator.

David Farrant, president of the British Psychic and Occult Society, claims he was the first person to see a seven-foot-tall eerie spirit outside the gates of Highgate Cemetery in 1969 and “dozens and dozens” of sightings have been reported ever since.

The investigator, who has written several books describing his experience, including In The Shadow of Highgate’s Vampire, said: “Since 2005 there have been more sightings and there is no reason to think it won’t continue.”

The comments come after the Haringey Independent revealed this week that a team of ghost hunters, known as the North London Paranormal Investigators (NLPI), came face to face with the spirit in the cemetery just after 10pm on Wednesday, June 20.

A few little Changes
Mood:  bright
Topic: Updates

After what seems like years we have made a few little changes to DarkDestiny.co.uk.

Firstly we have adapted the whole site to be more visibly compatible with newer wide screen monitors and laptops. We have also added a button in the main menu for direct access to the non-cemetery (churchyard etc) section.

A few dead pages have been removed and text colour and format changed on the main seven cemetery pages. The Nunhead crypt page has been restored and that can obviously be found on the main Nunhead page.

Future Updates

We still would love to hear your suggestion regarding interesting cemeteries and burial grounds to visit and photograph. Maybe now more then ever it's important to capture these places photographically before they become yet another housing complex or are bulldozed to make room for more burials. Please email us - darkdestiny at operamail.com

Regards to all

Unexpected Photography at Ayots
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Abandoned Churches

Last Sunday it was the "radio nerds" event of the year. Anyone who's anybody in radio goes to the Luton Radio Rally held every year in May. My son and I went along with a friend to spend the morning browsing the vast quantities of radio rubbish (as my wife calls it) and acquire a nice sun tan in the process.

It was on the way back which is the part of interest to this blog. Due to a wrong turn we ended up taking a different route home, and nearing Welwyn Garden City I spied a sign for the village of Ayot St Lawrence. This immediately brought to mind a couple of locations which I have been meaning to photograph for a long time, but life on many aspects has prevented me from doing so thus far. Two of the Ayot villages have sites of interest which a gentleman recommended to me via email many months ago.

So our first stop was the derelict old church of St Lawrence. Although it was partially demolished in 1775, because it was obstructing the view from Sir Lionel Lyde's new home, it appears to be well cared for and a lovely place to photograph on a sunny day.

Fellow friend and explorer strikes a pose at St Lawrence

Our second stop was a small abandoned burial ground which we believe to once of been a church yard, although no sign of a church building is evident. Situated in the village of Ayot St Peter the ground is almost invisible to the passing visitor and it was only my prior knowledge of it's existence that allowed us to find it. Heavily overgrown it contains two impressive tombs complete with iron railings another two less extravagant tombs and a small array of headstones as well as the complete skeletal remains of what we think was a deer.

Unfortunately I didn't have a decent camera on me so the photos I took are less then ideal. However my friend and I decided we would spend a day visiting all the abandoned churches and chapels in the area and photograph them with better equipment later in the summer, however I will add the photos I took last Sunday as a temporary measure but will replace them later this year after our grand church tour 2010. So check back in a week or two for them.

Photo Update - East Finchley Cemetery
Mood:  chatty
Topic: East Finchley Cemetery
Easter Weekend and not much to do locally so I decide a photo update is in order. Due to the lack of tube services in London over the Easter period my original destination wasn't possible, so second choice was East Finchley Cemetery.

You know how some things seem to conspire against you and you go somewhere or do something with some reluctance only to find it was the best decision you've made in a while. Well this was one of those times, and I'm grateful to TFL for their rotten tube service this Easter.

Opened in 1855 East Finchley Cemetery turned out to be a stunning place which impressed me for multiple reasons. I think the reasons are evident from the photo's. It may have been an overcast day which was less then ideal for photography but I think the attractiveness still shines through.

Most viewed photo on Dark Destiny
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Statistics

Looking through the Dark Destiny logs today, I decided to see what the most viewed photograph was on the entire site. Not surprisingly the title belongs to a photo taken on my very first visit to Highgate Cemetery. I can't remember what year it was but I know for certain that it was on a New Years Day.

The second most viewed photo was more of a surprise. It belonged to Abney Park and was a view up the inside of a turret on the chapel tower.

As of November 9th 2009, below is the Dark Destiny no.1 photo:

Photo Update - St Peter St Albans Church
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Updates

Our latest update is now online. The Church of St Peter St Albans has been a place of worship since it's foundation in 948. Since then, it has been rebuilt and altered many times and today remains an attractive and functioning church in the Hertfordshire City of St Albans.

Audrey Niffenegger - Her Fearful Symmetry
Mood:  bright
Topic: Audrey Niffenegger

The long awaited book by Audrey Niffenegger has been released and is flying off the shelves. "Her Fearful Symmetry" is based around Highgate Cemetery and is the result of extensive research which even saw Audrey Niffenegger train and then conduct tours around Highgate's Western Cemetery.

Currently rated by Amazon UK as the 52nd best seller "Her Fearful Symmetry" is the ghostly gothic tale of twin young ladies who inherit, from their aunt, a London flat which boarders Highgate Cemetery.

At present I can't tell you anymore as I'm still reading it and enjoying every second. All I can really say, is that, this has to be the perfect Christmas present for any cemetery enthusiast.

Regards

Neil

Appeal to adopt 500 WWI graves
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Appeals

More people are needed to tend the 700 graves of soldiers from Gloucestershire who fought in the First World War.

The local branch of the Western Front Association (WFA) is appealing for volunteers to "adopt" a grave.

Tasks would include visiting the grave twice a year to ensure the headstone is maintained, the grass cut and to lay a poppy on Armistice Day.

Poll Results
Mood:  cool
Topic: Poll

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in our recent poll, the results can be seen below:

So yes Dark Destiny will remain, thank you for your support.

Also, we now have some new locations to visit which have been recommended to us via email. Some of the most interesting and atmospheric cemeteries/graveyards remain unknown and hidden from view to those not familiar with the area, so please if you know of any such places in the London area, do let us know.

Take Care
