The Fox Sisters, the begining of modern Spiritualism

Spiritualism is an officially recognised religion in most western countries although it is still considered a cult or "New Religious Movement" by the Church of England. It was at it's most prominent from the 1840s to the 1920's but in recent times has been brought into the public gaze, especially in the UK & USA, by TV programs such as "The Sixth Sense with Colin Fry" and "Crossing Over" with John Edward.
 
The Religions distinguishing feature is the belief that the spirits of the dead can be contacted by mediums who act as a channel of communication between the two worlds.
 
Although considered a gift, the ability to communicate with the other side is also thought to be achievable by everyone. It may take many years of fine tuning the mind into being receptive of psychic energy and learning to distinguish between their own thoughts and those of a communicating spirit to be considered a developed medium, but it is to a degree a natural born ability possessed by all.
