Be happy - your genes will thank you for it!
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Happiness

American scientists have found different types of happiness have surprisingly contrary effects on our genes.

UCLA research found that people who derive their happiness from helping others have strong antibody genes, while people who get their kicks from self-gratification can suffer from low antiviral and anitbody gene expression.

The study, which also involved the University of North Carolina, is the first of its kind to examine how positive psychology impacts human gene expression.

People who are do-gooders have high levels of 'eudaimonic well-being'.

They derive their happiness from a deep sense of purpose and meaning in life showed favourable gene-expression profiles in their immune cells.

Those studied from this happiness group had low levels of inflammatory gene expression and strong antibody and antiviral genes.

However, individuals who have high levels of 'hedonic well-being' - the type of happiness that comes from consuming goods and self-gratification - showed the opposite.

This group of people showed  high inflammation and weak antibody and antiviral genes.

The study's findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The research, led by Steven Cole, a UCLA professor of medicine and Barbara L. Fredrickson of the University of North Carolina, has taken a decade.

The scientists have looked at how the human genome responds to fear, stress, misery and other negative mental states, but focused on how human genes might respond to positive psychology in this study.

Why Your Brain Loves Yoga?
Mood:  bright
Topic: Yoga

Ever wonder why you feel so good and refreshed after a yoga class. I tend to feel amazing, and I enjoy the calming effects. Practicing yoga and meditation can effect your brain in a positive way. You can definitely notice a positive difference after attending a yoga session. Even scientists and researchers are now studying how yoga affects the brain.

Studies have been made to prove that after one yoga session, the GABA levels in your brain increase. Anti-depressants also work by boosting these GABA levels. Yoga seems to be the better choice for depression, anxiety and stress, since there are no side effects and many benefits for your mind, body and spirit.

Yoga can improve your cognitive functions and memory by reducing the stress levels in your body. When you are stressed, your body releases cortisol into the blood stream, which uses up a lot of glucose in the body. This leads to a fuel deficit for your brain. Too much cortisol produces high amounts of free radicals which damages your brain cells.

Your state of mind affects how fast your body heals
Mood:  bright
Topic: Healing

The verdict is in: A more positive state of mind dramatically improves healing outcomes for a wide variety of conditions.

This is why researcher Judith Simon Prager travels around the world teaching "verbal first aid," a practice in which an injured person is repeatedly reassured that "the worst is over" and they are safe.

This practice has been experimentally proven to improve healing outcomes, in part because people who have suffered trauma are in a highly suggestible state and are more prone to powerful placebo effects or stress responses.

Other studies have shown that practices such as Qi Gong, which teaches awareness and control of the body's own stress responses, or self-awareness therapy (a more Western practice with similar goals) can reduce the pain or discomfort of fibromyalgia and also cure or reduce symptoms of health conditions as varied as heart disease, diabetes and even cancer.

On a different note, researchers have shown that having others around dramatically increases the rate of healing of physical wounds, compared to healing rates in social isolation.

Satellite data proves Earth has not been warming the past 18 years - it's stable
Mood:  cool
Topic: Global Warming

Planetary temperatures have remained largely stable throughout the past several decades, according to new data released by the Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) satellite. Mean temperatures gauged across multiple measurement platforms including GISS, HadCRUt4, NCDC, UAH and RSS definitively show that the planet has not been warming for nearly 18 years, taking the wind out of the sails of the global warming fallacy.

Based on the figures contained in the new datasets, surface temperatures have continued to fluctuate as they have since the beginning of time, but there has not been a steady rise in mean temperature as we have all been led to believe. To the contrary, surface temperatures are technically lower on average than they were several years ago, and appear to be continuing on a generally downward trend in an apparent cooling phase.

"According to the RSS satellite data, whose value for March 2014 is just in, the global warming trend in the 17 years 8 months since August 1996 is zero," explains Climate Depot. "There may have been no global warming at all during the entire lifetimes of all students now in high school."

Warming trends were gathered from each of the respective datasets and are averaged in order to make the assessment. And with this average hovering at 0.14 degrees Celsius over nearly 18 years, which is well within the +/-0.15 degrees Celsius combined measurement, the data analyzed suggests that global warming is nonexistent, to put it bluntly.

"The RSS satellite dataset shows no global warming at all for 212 months from August 1996 to March 2014," adds Climate Depot. "That is just over half the entire 423-month satellite record," which first began back in 1979.

Biggest recorded temperature increase occurred between 1663-1762, long before industrialization

Interestingly, planetary warming was most pronounced long before the industrial revolution took place. The fastest centennial warming rate, or the largest temperature increase that occurred over the course of a 100-year period, was in Central England during the 1600s. The period between 1663 and 1762, to be precise, saw a century-length increase of 0.9 degrees Celsius.

The fastest temperature increase lasting a decade or more also occurred in the 1600s, long before there were coal plants, manufacturing facilities, gasoline-fueled vehicles, and other modern inventions often blamed for global warming. The 40-year period between 1694 and 1733 saw the century-length equivalent of a 4.3 degrees Celsius increase in surface temperatures, the highest ever recorded.

"Since 1950, when a human influence on global temperature first became theoretically possible, the global warming trend is equivalent to 1.2 degrees Celsius per century," reads the Climate Depot report, putting things into perspective. "The fastest warming rate lasting ten years or more since 1950 occurred over the 33 years from 1974 to 2006. It was equivalent to 2.0 degrees Celsius per century."

In other words, as damaging as man-made industry may be to the health of our environment, it does not appear that this activity is having any substantial influence on global climate patterns. Our planet is simply in a constant state of flux, whether that be upwards or downwards for a time, and using fossil fuels or raising cattle -- yes, the government is now blaming cow farts on global warming -- plays little or no role in this process.

"Climate change is the natural process the world goes through year after year, century after century, eon after eon," writes one Fox News Insider commenter about the new data.

Symptoms – The Subtle Language Of The Body
Mood:  bright
Topic: Alternative Health

Our world is full of subtleties that are often overlooked in the rush of modern life. Oftentimes we see what is most evident and believe that to be all there is – we miss the web of more subtle events and objects that accompany the obvious but are hidden to the casual observer. We are satisfied that the easily observable is the extent of what is, and we fail to look “behind the scenes”.

In most parts of life, this approach is sufficient – it allows us to function in the world without being mired in existential questions.

However, in medicine and in the appreciation of the disease process, I think this approach to life has led us far astray.   It has led us to see the obvious symptoms as the whole of the disease. This has led to the conclusion that if we suppress the expression of symptoms, then we have taken care of the disease.

But let’s look behind the scenes for a minute.

The body, regardless of breed or species, is a complex phenomenon. We can see, feel, touch, and measure the physical body but this is only part of the total being. The subtle life force, that energy that separates the living from the dead, is not palpable or measurable but is none the less important to the being. It is at the level of this energetic basis that we find the ebb and flow of life, the patterns that eventually ultimate onto the physical body, that eventually become physically tangible. If these patterns are smooth and harmonious, the physical body reflects a positive state of health. If the patterns are disrupted and chaotic, the physical body reflects an array of “dis-ease” symptoms.

Almost all of the traditional healing arts recognize this life force and its importance to health. It is known as Chi, Ki, Prana, The Innate, and the Vital Force by the various disciplines of the healing arts.

The life force is unrecognized in conventional medicine because it can not be measured in the laboratory or seen under the microscope. Instead, in the Reductionist approach of conventional medicine, the functions of the life force are ascribed to random physiological and biochemical processes, which are measurable.

The reason it is important to look behind the scenes of the symptom is that if we are treating at the level of the symptom, we are treating at the result and not the cause of the disease. Disease is first and foremost a disruption of and a disharmony in the life force that manifests on the physical plane as the various symptoms of disease. To treat curatively, to truly improve the health and vitality of the patient, we must treat at the level of cause – the disruption and disharmony of the life force.

In more practical terms, symptoms are nothing more than the language of the body describing the unseen and unmeasurable disharmony of the life force. We need to take judgment out of the loop – symptoms are not good, symptoms are not bad, symptoms are simply the best language the body can use to tell us of its state of balance and harmony.

If we treat symptoms suppressively or palliatively without addressing their true cause, we are disallowing the body the true expression of its disease, its vent as it were, and are allowing the true disease, the disharmony of the life force, to continue unchecked. This continued disharmony will be shown through increasing severity of symptoms as the life force wanes.

Visit nearly any nursing home and you will see the long-term results of uncured disease that has been allowed to manifest and mature through the life of the individual.

True healing comes from restoring balance and harmony to the life force, not in artificially subduing symptoms.  It is here that Homeopathy excels.

About the Author

Dr. Glen Dupree is a 1982 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, where he received his training in the techniques and applications of conventional allopathic medicine. After running a solo veterinary practice for a number of years, Dr. Dupree began to note that he was treating the same individuals over and over again for the same “diseases” or worse “diseases” as the pets aged. He also noted a decline in the general health of the pet population as conventional medicine became more aggressive with more vaccines and drugs at the veterinarian’s disposal. He began to rethink the things veterinary school had taught him about medicine. About this same time, his son developed serious health problems which conventional medicine was unable to cure. These events led Dr. Dupree to explore alternative forms of medicine.Through a series of fortuitous events Dr. Dupree was led to the Professional Course in Veterinary Homeopathy taught by Dr. Richard Pitcairn and the rest, as they say, is history. He has since furthered his Homeopathic education through Dr. Pitcairn’s Advanced Course in Veterinary Homeopathy, as well as through studies with various human Homeopaths in the US and abroad. Dr. Dupree was certified by the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy in 1996.

Doctors are being pushed into labeling children as mentally ill
Mood:  irritated
Topic: Society

A worrying number of shy and book smart children are being labelled as 'mentally ill' by doctors who  are under pressure from parents to give them a diagnosis according to a top psychiatrist.

Professor Sir Simon Wessely, the new head of the Royal College of Psychiatrists says that there is a growing trend of medicating normal traits in children by the insistence of overbearing parents.

Pushy parents are getting GPs to prescribe drugs such as Ritalin and Prozac to treat serious disorders creating a huge rise in antidepressants and drug use among young children.

Along with mental health diagnosis, one of the most commonly medicated disorders is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

If a child is seen as being overactive, but does not necessarily have ADHD, he could be prescribed drugs, Professor Wessely said.

He told The Times: 'Certain behaviour carry stigma and there's less stigma if it's associated with a disorder. Often it's about the avoidance of guilt.

'You get obvious pressures from parents: we've all been to middle class dinner parties where so many parents seem to say their kids are mildly autistic and yet they've just got into Oxford. And you think 'I don't really buy that one'...

Around three to seven per cent of children, or 400,000, are believed to have ADHD in the UK, with many being prescribed drugs to try and improve their concentration at school.

According to recent figures, the use of ADHD drugs has tripled over the past decade and antidepressants usage has shot up too.

Professor Wessely said that it is becoming less common for children to be labelled as 'shy' but they are more likely to be branded as having a social phobia or a behavioural problem.

And even schools are benefitting from mislabelling pupils, says Professor Wessely, as the more special needs children in a school, the more funds they'll get.

However, some experts claim that many disorders have no merit at all, and are in fact, made up.

Paediatric neurologist Dr Richard Saul, based in Chicago, believes that ADHD simply ‘doesn’t exist’ and is being used as a mask for less serious problems.

Breast cancer survivors 'do not exercise enough'
Mood:  lazy
Topic: Exercise

Exercise can aid recovery after breast cancer but many women are not active enough, a study suggests.

Being active is known to be beneficial but US researchers, writing in the journal Cancer, said they had found many women did too little.

Only a third met recommended activity levels.

UK breast cancer groups said women here also needed more support to keep active after having the disease.

The American study looked at the pre and post-diagnosis exercise levels of 1,735 women aged 20-74 who had breast cancer between 2008 and 2011 in North Carolina.

In the US and the UK, adults are recommended to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week.

But this study found only 35% of women who had experienced breast cancer met the physical activity guidelines.

'Helps patients cope'

In the UK, campaigners said women here also needed to exercise more.

Caroline Dalton, of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "Physical activity after a breast cancer diagnosis has been shown to improve a patient's chances of survival and there is also some evidence that it may help to reduce the risk of breast cancer returning.

"Keeping active may also help patients cope, both during and after treatment, by improving general health and wellbeing."

Sun Exposure Can Protect Against Skin Cancer
Mood:  bright
Topic: Sun

If you make your living off of treating people with melanoma, you might (really, might) know a thing or two about skin cancer. Dr. Angus Dalgleish says he used to advise people slather on the sunblock and avoid the sun like vampires. But now, his tune has changed and he has started advising his patients differently. The crux of his advice: reduce your cancer risk by increasing your sun exposure.

It all boils down to vitamin D.

Our body requires the sun to produce vitamin D; that’s why it’s called the sunshine vitamin. The sun is the absolute best source of vitamin D. And, Dalgleish says, vitamin D is one of the best weapons against skin cancer.

His interest in the vitamin D–cancer connection began when he read that researchers at Leeds University discovered low vitamin D levels to be a major risk factor for melanoma. In a world where we were told the sun caused this deadly form of skin cancer, the research was groundbreaking.

Dr. Dalgleish began testing his patients’ vitamin D levels and found something remarkable. While he expected some to be deficient, he found nearly all of them were deficient in vitamin D. Remember, these were melanoma patients—people already fighting the disease.

“If we supplement people who are low they may do better than expected. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if vitamin D turns out to be more useful in improving outcomes in cases of early relapse than drugs costing £10,000 a year,” said Dalgleish. “I spent a decade studying interferon for which the NHS paid £10,000 annually per patient for years for very little benefit. Vitamin D is much more likely to give a benefit in my view.”

Beginners Yoga - Benefits of Yoga
Mood:  bright
Topic: Yoga

On a purely cosmetic level, a yoga body is a beautiful body with its long, lean muscles and taut, tight abs, thighs and butt. The increase in circulation brings an inner glow to your skin, makes your eyes shine and your hair gleam.

It tones the whole inner body too: liver, lungs, kidneys, spleen, intestines, heart etc. The precise postures of yoga work deep into the body, causing blood to circulate profoundly rather than just around the body's outer edge. It nourishes every organ as well as softening the muscle and ligament tissue.

The deep stretching brings both bones and muscles gently back into their optimum alignment while lubricating the joints. It also fosters that gorgeous, lean, muscled 'yoga body' -- you can always tell if someone is using yoga by those long, lean muscles.

If you practice yoga regularly, you will almost automatically lose weight and develop a streamlined body shape. Yoga can improve both the oxygenation of your blood and its circulation.

It is also a superb way of helping your body to detoxify because it encourages lymphatic flow, which is the 'waste removal' system of the body. Not only does your body detox when you perform yoga; your mind does too.

The specific breathing techniques of yoga -- pranayama, directly affect the nervous system, eliciting the 'relaxation response' in which the parasympathetic nervous system takes over from the sympathetic system. As a result, you feel calm, cool and in control.

Seriously, if you haven't tried yoga, grab that mat and get going.
