Scary Face Image Spooks the Web
Mood:  bright
Topic: Curiosities

This photo has been floating around the net for a few weeks now. Is it faked......we have no idea. Could it be just an optical illusion......maybe, or is there a real spirit lurking in this living room?

If you can't yet see the face, keep looking, as sooner or later you'll make eye contact.

Osama Bin Laden, Adolf Hitler both declared dead on May 1st
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Curiosities

Osama Bin Laden and Adolf Hitler share a towering reputation for evil - and also an anniversary.

Both were declared dead on May 1.

Late on May 1, 1945 - about as late as President Obama's TV announcement Sunday - German radio announced that Hitler had fallen "fighting to the last breath against Bolshevism and for Germany."

He had actually committed suicide the day before.

In some cultures May 1 is the official beginning of summer. In many places, May Day is also Labor Day, a celebration of the working man.

May 1 is also the anniversary of President Bush's ill-conceived 2003 Mission Accomplished speech, prematurely announcing an end to combat in Iraq.

Obama, who might have used the words in his TV address, did not.

Zombie studies at the University of Baltimore

It is a class to die for - Zombie studies is now on the curriculum at the University of Baltimore.

The new course, which promises to "get you ready for a zombie apocalypse", invites students to devour classic zombie films and comics.

Instead of essays, they write horror scripts or draw storyboards for their ideal monster movie.

The minor class, titled English 333, has already been dubbed "Zombie 101" by the Baltimore Sun newspaper.

It was introduced to meet a demand for "interesting, off-the-wall" courses for a new minor in pop culture, according to Jonathan Shorr, chairman of the university's school of communications design.

Aliens, ghosts, dreams and bad hair advice reported to police
Mood:  loud
Topic: Curiosities

Devon and Cornwall Police have received more than 150 strange calls from the public in th elast 15 years - including ghost reports, UFO sightings and dream crime solving.

Police call handlers were faced with everything from a call from Callington reporting his wife and dog being abducted by aliens, a UFO being sighted over a pie factory in Okehampton and numerous reports of poltergeists and ghosts.

In one case in October 2003, the force recorded: "Caller states he has got a ghost on CCTV. Caller wanted advice on who he could contact as the footage was going to make him a million. Advised to go to the Press."

The same year, one caller claimed a "ghost gives him horrible hairstyles and has some dodgy photos of him. Ghost is called Paul Newman."

The alien encounter in Callington was put down as a "suspected drunk call". Other UFOs were reported in Bideford, Plymouth, Falmouth and Exeter.

People described "a light about 50ft above the roof tops zig-zagging along", "a long, white cylinder thing like a train in the sky" and "orange balls moving slowly upwards and in all different directions".

Many of the calls were received from people with known mental health problems or from inside mental health units. Most of the incidents were logged as "non attendance" or "routine" although some others forced officers to respond.

Documents show that in July 2004 someone from Newton Abbot reported a "ghost driver" on the A38.

"Two old ladies in white Fiesta," the police recorded, "come onto the A38B carriageway on the off slip facing the wrong way. Goodstone Cross. Stopped on the hard shoulder, trying to reverse back up the off slip."

Police were forced to respond quickly but could find "no trace of the vehicle".

In December 2006 – at the height of the hunt for the killer of five prostitutes in Ipswich, Suffolk – one woman from Newquay contacted Devon and Cornwall Police with information.

"Lady who says she is paranormal has had a dream about the Ipswich murder," the documents record. "Details of dream taken and forwarded to Suffolk incident room."

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said yesterday: "Our call centre operators take many types of calls and the vast majority are for emergencies or relate to non urgent inquiries of one type or another.

"There are occasions though when a more unusual call is received. These are all dealt with professionally by our highly trained staff who access and process them in an appropriate way."

An American student whose heart stopped after he deliberately electrocuted himself in a science class is suing his teacher for not warning him it was dangerous.

Kyle Dubois, 18, is also taking legal action against the school district and the city of Dover in New Hampshire.

Dubois and his parents claim teacher Thomas Kelley did not tell him and other students of the dangers of the demonstration power cords in their electrical trades class.

They are seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost income due to time away from work and other damages related to the incident, which occurred on March 11.

What the DUCK!!!!

During a much needed short break in a coastal village called Heacham in North Norfolk, I couldn't help but smile at this sign we saw in a residential road. It was needed though, as the ducks walk around as if they own the place, which I'm sure they do!

Tokyo’s oldest man dead for 30 years

Topic: Curiosities

On the occasion of Sogen Kato’s 111th birthday, officials in Tokyo, Japan wanted to pay the oldest man in the city a visit to celebrate his amazing milestone. But when they arrived at the home, they were turned away by Mr. Kato’s granddaughter, who told them, “My grandfather is well, but he’s refused to meet with anyone.”

On Wednesday, the granddaughter went to police and told them the truth: Mr. Kato had been dead for at least 30 years, and was still in his bedroom. His mummified remains were lying in bed, wearing long underwear and covered by a blanket. A newspaper from 1978 was by his side.

His family said Mr. Kato had taken to his room 30 years ago in an effort to be like Buddha and refused to eat or drink, the Daily Mainichi News reported.

“He shut himself in a first-floor room about 30 years ago in line with his doctrines, refusing to take food or water. When we looked inside the room in March this year, we saw the skeletal remains of our grandfather,” a granddaughter told police.

The Man Who Cheated the Devil

Mackenzie's tomb can be seen to the right of the church

William MacKenzie was a man of moderate means who went on to become a Victorian railway entrepreneur in the early 1800s. However, more then for his business, MacKenzie was known for his gambling habits. Legend has it that MacKenzie made a deal with the Devil during a poker game. If the devil won then his prize would be Mackenzie's soul, but only, as the Devil kindly agreed, when Mackenzie's body was laid to rest within the earth.

Naturally the Devil won and according to the legend as he neared his death in 1851, MacKenzie developed a plan to trick fate. He had a pyramid shaped tomb built above ground and left instructions to be entombed sitting at a card table, holding a perfect hand. So, if the Devil came to get him, since he wasn't buried within the earth, his soul couldn't be taken.

The tomb still stands in the run down St. Andrew's churchyard in Liverpool, though whether MacKenzie is sitting inside holding a perfect poker hand or not, nobody really knows.
