Lavender Hill Cemetery was opened on the 27th July 1872. The Cemetery was designed by the architect Mr T J Hill and originally  was 9 acres in size and cost £9000. The two matching chapels, one Anglican and the other Nonconformist, still stand today but only the Anglican chapel is in active service.
 
In 1897 the Cemetery was extended by a further 3 acres and again in 1997 when the Strayfield Road extension was added.
 
Today the Cemetery is well kept under the administration of Enfield Borough Council. The two Chapels, Lodge, Gates and Railings are all listed structures.
 
Upon our visit the unusual head to head burial arrangement on a couple of sections was something we can't remember ever seeing in any other Cemetery. Pre-formed concrete tracks upon which the headstones were mounted back to back with the grave space grassed over gave the appearance of under-utilized burial land. I'm not really sure what the advantages of this arrangement are, other then ease of maintenance, but it really seemed to de-personalise the individual graves.
 
The Cemetery is situated in close proximity to the famous Chase Farm Hospital (once a work house) with the nearest railway station being "Gordon Hill" approximately a 10-15 minute walk away.
