Ayot St Peter Graveyard

This small abandoned burial ground is situated within the village of Ayot St Peter in Hertfordshire. Easily missed the gate is the only part visible from the road during the Summer and even that might be missed to the casual passer by due to it's position on a fairly sharp and narrow bend.

Judging by the remains of a stone boundary wall we strongly suspect that this was once the site of the original village church. As yet we have been unable to confirm this as very little information is available, and there is no visible signs of a church structure or foundation within the burial ground.

Entering the ground you get the feeling that this place may go years between visitors. Their is no litter and no sign of human presence, the only other visitor still remained, and that was the skeletal remains of a deer.

Within, there are three tombs surrounded by ironwork, two of these are of fairly impressive proportions and the third is no more then a stone slab with inscriptions. There is a small cluster of headstones and one or two other monuments including what looked like a relatively modern red granite tomb almost totally shrouded in brambles.

The photos here were taken with a poor quality camera due to this visit being impromptu. We hope to return in the future to remedied that as soon as possible.
