Church of St Peter, Benington

Benington is a small, picturesque village set in the Hertfordshire countryside and has been described as one of the most attractive villages in the county. It's located in north-east Hertfordshire, to the east of Stevenage, and is 35 miles north of London.

The Church of St Peter is thought to of been in existence, in one form or another, since Beortwulf’s time (839-853 AD). Beortwulf was a Christian and King of Mercia who often spent time at his palace, presumably on the site of the Benington Lordship Manor House. Benington Lordship's gardens are today open to the public and the remains of a Norman Motte and Bailey fortification are still clearly visible from the rear of St Peter's graveyard.

Our visit was on a dull and gloomy day in October 2014.
