Paddington Old Cemetery

Paddington Old Cemetery was opened in 1855 and covers some 24 acres. The architect and planner was Thomas Little (1802-1859). Having gained experience in cemetery work by designing Nunhead's Anglican Chapel, he laid out Paddington Cemetery in a regular scheme of paths in the shape of a horse shoe.

Within the cemetery there are two lodges, two chapels with a porte cochere each and a central belfry. 'The Builder' commented that grouping the chapels and their ancillary buildings in this way obviated 'the unsatisfactory and diminutive appearance which small detached chapels in large open spaces always present'.

Today one chapel still remains in use and there is still a small amount of burial space left.

Interments include:

Edward Barry (1830 -1880) the architect who designed the Royal Opera House and Charing Cross Station Hotel.

Jabez Burns (1805 - 1876) eminent minister of the English General Baptists.

Danny Maher (1881 - 1916) was an American Hall of Fame jockey who also became a Champion jockey in Great Britain.

Arthur Orton (1834 - 1898) the Tichborne claimant of the Victorian era.
