St Albans Cathedral in Hertfordshire, began life as an Abbey in 1077. It became a Cathedral in 1877 which was 16 years before building work was finally completed.

The Cathedral is perhaps, best known for having the longest nave in England. At 84 metres (275 feet) the nave is without doubt the most impressive feature of the entire structure. The Abbey church, although legally a Cathedral church, differs in certain particulars from most of the other Cathedrals in England as it is also used as a parish church. Unusual is the fact that the Dean is the Rector and has the same powers, responsibilities, and duties as the rector of any other parish.
