St Mary the Virgin Church is situated in the historic Hertfordshire town of Ware which dates
as far back as the Mesolithic period (which ended about 4000 BC).
Evidence suggests there has been a church on the site of St Mary the Virgin since 1078. The building
is Grade I listed and sits opposite the lovely Priory Grounds with it's network of streams and rivers.
Much of the graveyard has been cleared of headstones and monuments many of the former now line
the perimeter walls. The graveyard is dissected by a road and provides two pleasant green areas for
sitting on one of the many benches watching the world go by.
There are two significant graves in the churchyard, one on each side of the dividing road. On
the church side can be found the grave of Dr William Mead who's gravestone claims he lived to the grand old age of 148
Years, 9 Months, 3 Weeks & 4 Days, more can be read about Dr Mead here.
On the other side of the road can be found the grand Grade II listed ornate sarcophagus tomb
of Edward Chuck a maltster of Ware. Edward met an unfortunate end in November 1852 when at the age of 69 he was fatally injured as
a result of a accident involving his horse and cart.
